I've looked at what other "digital detox retreats" in Costa Rica offer. Most of them have a paragraph on their website about unplugging. Some have a basket where you can put your phone. A few "encourage" limited screen time between yoga sessions.
None of that works. And deep down, you know it.
Putting your phone in a basket in your room is like putting a bottle of whisky on the nightstand of someone trying to quit drinking and saying "we encourage moderation." The whole point of addiction is that willpower isn't enough. The environment has to change.
What actually happens when you arrive here
You get off a boat. You're in Las Caletas, a small village at the edge of Corcovado National Park — what National Geographic called the most biologically intense place on Earth. There is no Uber. There is no mall. There is no road in.
We greet you, show you your room, sit with you, and then we take your phone. Physically. We store it safely. You can access it if you truly need to — but it's not in your pocket, it's not on your nightstand, it's not whispering to you.
That's the difference. Structure removes temptation. You don't need more willpower. You need an environment where checking your phone isn't an option.
The 72-hour wall
The first day without your phone, you'll reach for your pocket about 80 times. That's not an exaggeration — that's what we observe with every guest. Your hand goes to your thigh where the phone usually sits. There's nothing there. It feels wrong.
Day two, the anxiety peaks. You might feel restless, irritable, bored. Good. That's your dopamine system recalibrating. It's been hijacked by variable-reward loops — the same mechanism that makes slot machines addictive — and now it's being forced to reset.
Day three, something starts to shift. You notice the sound of the ocean more clearly. You hold eye contact longer at dinner. You fall asleep faster. You start to hear your own thoughts — not the algorithm's version of your thoughts.
Day four is when guests tell us they feel different. Not relaxed. Different. Like something that was compressed is finally expanding again. That's why we require a 4-night minimum. Anything shorter doesn't reach the threshold.
Why Costa Rica, and why here specifically
Costa Rica is full of wellness retreats. Nosara, Santa Teresa, Uvita — beautiful places with beautiful price tags and beautiful Instagram accounts. Most of them cost $2,000–$3,500 per week. Most of them are hotels with a yoga schedule attached.
We are not a hotel. We are not a tour operator. There is no reception desk, no spa, no infinity pool. You stay with local families — Elmer, Rafa, Virginia, Davit — in their homes in Las Caletas village. They cook your meals three times a day. The money you pay stays in the community.
The Osa Peninsula is the last frontier of Costa Rica. It's where the jungle still wins. Scarlet macaws fly over your breakfast. Howler monkeys are your alarm clock. The Pacific Ocean is your living room. You don't need a wellness program when the environment itself is the program.
What you're actually paying
$85 a night. That's the real price. Private room, private bathroom, three meals a day, jungle and beach access, phone collected on arrival. No hidden costs, no upsells at check-in.
Our cost to host you is about $60 per night. We charge $85. That's the margin that keeps this model alive and keeps the families employed. Full transparency — because that's how we do things here.
If you want daily one-on-one beach training and personal coaching, that's $50 each per day — optional, but we recommend it. A full week with everything included comes to about $1,150 per person for group retreats.
Compare that to the $2,000–$3,500 you'd pay at a typical Costa Rica wellness retreat, and you'll understand why we don't need a marketing budget. The math speaks.
This isn't for everyone
If you want luxury, air conditioning, and a cocktail bar — this isn't your place. If you want to "unplug" for a weekend and post about it on Monday — this isn't your place.
This is for people who are ready. People who feel something is off and can't name it. People who've been scrolling for answers they're never going to find on a screen. People who want to hear themselves think again.
You arrive by boat. We take your phone. Nature does the rest.
